You need to be vigilant about the quality and standards of magnesium oxide products, including ResCom®, you may wish to buy.
During 2014, Mgo Corporation and our associated global partners carried out extensive testing. This resulted in our no longer accepting stated performances from manufacturers or suppliers of magnesium oxide board. Over 95% of these products are not suitable for the applications they are sold to the consumer for.
The SGS Accredited testing under the American ICC-ES Standards for use as an Exterior and Wet Area Lining (ASTM C1185/86) clearly ruled out the use of all common/standard magnesium oxide products. That is correct! All high quality test samples failed to pass all the ASTM guidelines, most notably water permeability.
As a result, Mgo Corporation has developed a full range of specifically engineered “fit for purpose” products. They have been fully tested and approved under all aspects of ASTM C1185/86, accredited by CodeMark and under ICC for use in all areas of building and construction in America, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Sweden. This includes Exterior and Wet Area Linings.
Over the past 8 years, Mgo Corporation has invested heavily in understanding the characteristics and performances of magnesium oxide board. To mitigate risk to our company and clients and to be able to provide a product that will truly deliver the performances we promote. The journey has been, at times, challenging and disappointing. We discovered that the vast majority of magnesium oxide board manufacturers, trading houses and on-selling groups have absolutely no idea how or if their products will actually perform when applied in a building, other than “the worst mgo product will not burn”. It was also discouraging to learn that most of the supporting ISO and Testing documents supplied by manufacturers and trading houses are fake. Or have been altered to show a result that will satisfy the buyer.
The sales pitches used are both confusing and misleading: magnesium oxide board that apparently exudes water vapour into the air to quench a fire (we’d love for this to be true, but it is unfortunately scientifically impossible); people claiming to have patents for a sheathing process which has been around significantly longer than they have; claims of structural performance, simply because five people can stand on a panel; and the list goes on.
As with any product, there are good and bad magnesium oxide products throughout the world. Cheap can become expensive. Our advice to consumers is to perform due diligence and call the appropriate 3rd party accreditation authority, as well as the testing laboratory. Gain clear confirmation that the products you are buying are genuine and approved for the applications you are planning to use them for.
Certified compliant to the National Construction Code and Building Code of Australia, our fire rated, non-combustible boards are the first building products in the world to receive approval under the JAS-ANZ CodeMark scheme at the highest level.
